Foundation date or period 1766 :

Discovery of properties of sulphurated water

  • History of the spa Since 1821, Enghien has been regularly used as a source of sulphurated water. The first of its springs was discovered in 1766 by Louis

Cotte, a priest from the Order of Oratorians. This spring ran into a “smelly stream” emerging under the overflow from the “Montmorenci” pond, the present-day Enghien Lake. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the thermal site comprised around ten springs. Eight of these springs were officially recognised for public use by a decree on 18th July 1865. The origin of the sulphurated waters at Enghien is due to its geological specificities. The waters of the spring – originally superficial – have no direct link with the current lake. They are naturally isolated from it.

During the year 2001, 3 new capture points for the sulphurated water were constructed. This water has natural geological protection and biological self-purification capacities which have contributed to ensuring the survival of the water spring in an urbanised environment.

- Historic and cultural spa heritage In 1772, the Prince of Condé grants concession of the spring for 4 years to a pharmacist of Paris, Louis Guillaume le Vieillard, already owner of the waters of Passy.

In 1799, Condé gives to le Vieillard a new concession for 60 years in order to establish baths. Thermal baths thrive and the water begins to be sold in Paris.

In 1821, the first genuine thermal facilities are created by Péligot, who acquires the use of the Lake. He defines its limits, surrounds it with an avenue and drills ten wells to feed it. He founds a second spring, builds a second tower-tank and forms a new front for the thermal centre that he ends. From then, the building has three wings, perpendicular to the front and which correspond to the three pavilions.

After the recovery of Louis XVIII from a leg ulcer thanks to the Cotte spring - renamed the King’s spring -, Enghien became trendy within the Parisian society

Enghien-les-Bains' remarkable sulphurated calcic waters contain decongesting, anti-allergic and bacteriostatic properties, allowing a 21-day thermal treatment program (including 18 days of treatment) which has been approved by the Social Security in its recommendations for the treatment of Respiratory / ENT diseases. Open treatment or mini treatment programs are also offered. These treatment programs last 6 to 10 days and are either preventative or taken as additional therapy. Smoking cessation, voice problems, oral infections of the mucous membrane, and so on - these mini treatment programs are used as a preventive measure or as a complement to an individual existing therapy, as well as traditional treatment within the State health service.
